У зв’язку з escalating threats to the security of Poland and its neighboring countries, the Polish Aviation Navigation Agency (PAŻP) has announced new restrictions on air traffic in the eastern part of the country, specifically along the border with Ukraine and Belarus. These measures, effective from September 10th to December 9th, are a direct response to heightened security concerns.
The key restriction involves the creation of a limited zone, designated EP R129, which encompasses the entire border region. During daylight hours, this zone is subject to a complete ban on all civilian flights, with a few crucial exceptions. Military aircraft, emergency flights (GARDA, ALPHA SCRAMBLE), search and rescue operations (HEAD, STATE, SAR, HOSP, MEDEVAC, FFR), and flights related to the protection of critical infrastructure are permitted.
Furthermore, a 24/7 ban on the operation of civilian drones is in effect within the zone. This measure is particularly relevant following recent drone attacks by Russia on Ukrainian territory, which prompted Poland to activate its air defense systems and seek assistance from NATO allies.
NATO has invoked Article 4 of the North Atlantic Treaty, signaling a serious escalation of the situation. Sweden is reportedly preparing to deliver air defense systems and aircraft to Poland in response to the attacks. The PAŻP emphasizes that unauthorized entry into the restricted zone with drones constitutes a violation of aviation regulations.
This heightened security environment underscores the vulnerability of Poland’s airspace and the need for continued vigilance and international cooperation in addressing the evolving threat landscape.
